It was a starless night when it finally caught up with her. Soft touches worry glances and unspoken words choking her in the dead of night. An accumulation of everything she despised rolled into the being she would be forever stuck with. He crawled beneath her skin and lighted her veins something akin to fire. It crackled underneath Felicia's nerves and kept her on her toes. Always on edge.
He followed her to the balcony on this starless night. Forlorn and guiltridden glances pushed in her direction. With a soft tremble of his lower lips, he plopped his head on to her shoulder. Wrapping her trembling body in a one-arm embrace.
"I'm fine," she spoke softly. Even now she could hear their deaths echo all around. See the deaths behind every closed eye. Felicia was aware of how her voice trembled. Clenching teeth to keep tears at bay.
Ludus noticed her chattering teeth and blushing cheeks. The frostbiting the tip of her nose in the dark.
"You don't look fine," he spoke. It was the warm tone that did her in. Fire bled into her veins. Face going taut at the warmth emitting from him. She felt frozen. Stiff and shocked from the failure thrown in her face before.
"Then stop looking," she snapped at him. Pushing him away was hard, but sticking around was harder. She turned around and stalked off never once looking back. Even now she regrets it. Another failure to add to her ever-increasing list.
